吉村芳生《阿吽の自画像》2011年

吉村芳生（1950–2013）は、山口県防府市出身の現代美術家。日々の新聞紙を支持体に、自らの顔をシルクスクリーンで刷り重ねた「自画像」シリーズで広く知られ、生涯を通じて2,000点を超える自画像を制作し続けた。

本作《阿吽の自画像》は2011年制作のモノタイプ。「阿（あ）」と「吽（うん）」とは、仏教における宇宙の始まりと終わりを象徴する音であり、寺社の仁王像や狛犬が「阿形・吽形」として対をなすように、吉村はこの二音に自画像を重ねた。新聞紙という、世界の出来事を日々書き留め、やがて忘れられていく媒体の上に、一人の人間の顔が版で刷り出される。そこには個人の生と時代の記憶が交差する、静かな問いかけが宿っている。

モノタイプという技法により、本作は版画でありながら一点限りの表現となっている。吉村没後も国際的な評価は高まり続けており、東京国立近代美術館、山口県立美術館をはじめとする国内外の主要コレクションに収蔵されている。

Yoshimura Yoshio — Aun no Jigazō (Self-Portrait: Aum), 2011

Yoshimura Yoshio (1950–2013) was a contemporary artist from Hofu, Yamaguchi Prefecture, known for his decades-long series of self-portraits silkscreened onto newspaper. Over the course of his life, he created more than 2,000 such works — a practice at once obsessive and meditative, in which the individual human face is pressed into the flowing record of daily events.

"Aun no Jigazō" takes its title from the syllables "a" and "un" — the Japanese equivalent of alpha and omega, the all-encompassing sounds of the Buddhist cosmos. Just as the Niō guardian figures at temple gates stand as paired expressions of creation and dissolution, Yoshimura mapped these forces onto his own face. Working in monotype, each impression is singular: this is a print, yet also a unique work. The newspaper beneath — filled with headlines that once felt urgent, now fading — becomes a meditation on memory, time, and the ephemeral.

Yoshimura's work is held in major institutional collections, including the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, and the Yamaguchi Prefectural Art Museum. His posthumous recognition continues to grow internationally.
